When you think of jewelry, you're likely to think of a ball with glittering diamond necklaces and earrings on display. Some of the ladies are also likely wearing dainty yet exorbitantly expensive pearls on their ears and neck. A fabulously wealthy lady may wear a special choker of emeralds. Yet another can be wearing a diamond tiara.
If you would look deeper into this make-believe scene, you'd notice that most of these ladies we're imagining are middle-aged women who are assured of their standing in society and their family's wealth. Can you imagine a teenager wearing those ostentatious pieces?
You probably can't. Such jewelry as described above is not only too heavy for a teenager to carry. They are also inappropriate for today's teenagers' activities. A teenager is not likely to attend dull and adult affairs that have an orchestra playing Mozart in the background. They're much more likely to go hiking off on a road trip or to a party playing disco music. In such affairs, a necklace of wall-to-wall princess-cut emeralds will be truly out of place.
Teenagers, unlike adults, have different reasons for wearing jewelry. Sure, on of the reasons is to look nice and feel good. Beauty is also the province of the younger generation! But they may also wear jewelry in order to make a statement or show friendship. Perhaps to allude to membership to a particular social group or standing. A teenager is also likely to wear colorful beads and crystals because they complement her casual wardrobe.
And more and more, male teenagers are seeing the beauty that can be derived from jewelry. Stores abound that have wide ranges of customized jewelry for people of all ages, sexes and persuasions.
